A Glimpse Into The Making Of Rogers Park’s Debut Album “The Maggid”

$

The debut album from Rogers Park is here, and the title track of the album, “The Maggid” says everything you would want to know about this talented new band out of Chicago and it’s fresh yet classic folk sound.

In Europe there would be individuals who would go from town to town as storytellers, bringing tales of light and hope to local villagers in hard to reach places. Rogers Park brings this age-old tradition into our modern world and tells these stories and shares these lessons through song and music. Making a name for themselves by traveling nonstop to small Jewish communities all across the United States, Israel, Canada, and Europe over the past four years, the duo is ready to release their debut album featuring nine of their own original compositions with covers such as Moshe Yess’ “Pushka” and sung in sweet two-part harmony.

After becoming an internet sensation thanks to their viral videos and feel-good, upbeat songs like “Sukkah Falling” and “The Holy One”, the band was awarded “Continuum Theatre’s Best Chicagoland Jewish Band 2014”.

Rogers Park endeavors to take the deepest Jewish and Chassidic teachings and bring them to Jewish people of all walks of life. This is done through tasteful poetic interpretations sung in heart-warming vocal harmony and upbeat joyous arrangement.

Kurtz explains “We tried to put everything that we have from our knowledge of Chassidus and our experience working with Jewish communities on college campuses and throughout America into every song we write.

For example, track 7 “The Fisherman (From Vitebsk) draws on a character introduced in the Previous Rebbe’s Memoirs who exemplified the traits of sincerity, faith, and humility so central to the lifestyle of Chassidim. The title track, “The Maggid” tells the story of an individual searching far and wide to find his path only to discover that his path is to be found right in his own backyard. Track 8 – “The Holy One” takes the famous Chabad niggun “Nyet Nyet Nikavo” and interprets it with a unique folk spin.

We strive to bring the deepest and purest teachings in a way that goes straight to one’s heart and soul.”

The album was engineered and produced by Chicago producers Daniel Salcido and Matt Dougherty. Ruby Harris, of the Diaspora Yeshiva Band fame, adds original Jewish rock flavor on violin, mandolin, and electric guitar throughout the album.

“The Maggid” is available for purchase at you local Judaica stores and online at:

Shuky-001 (2)

A music experience so unique it won’t fit into any category.  A mix tailored to your audience.  A sound so varied it will be like never before. A fixture in the New York-Florida-France-Israel community for over 15 years, Shuky has created a wide variety of music experiences at hundreds of weddings, concerts, private events and festivals.

His love for music began a very young age, where Shuky was witness to his father’s collaboration with Jewish singers in producing and orchestrating concerts for the Parisian Jewish community. With his father’s encouragement, Shuky’s voice blossomed.

As he grew, so did the demand for his voice.  Performing at Bar Mitzvahs, local Simchas and festivities, and later graduating to larger performances including weddings and large-scale events. Bringing his unique sound, and personal energy, Shuky has become a staple on the Jewish stage.

Shuky, has spent the last several years immersed in the world of music, gaining mastery over his voice and craft; having learned from and performed with, Mordechai Ben David, Yaakov Shwekey, Itzik Eshel, Eyal Golan, and many others. He has traveled the globe lifting thousands of people on the wings of his music.

The time has finally arrived for Shuky to release music that reflected his own journey and personal style. Shuky brings a truly unique sound that embodies his love for all genres of music. There are times his music will move you with his soulful melodies, and there are times he will light you up with electricity. Perhaps he is most famous for his ability to remix sounds of old and sounds of new into an effervescent experience.

Here for the first time is his single “Libi”, recorded in Israel, where Shuky found himself in the midst of the latest wave of violence. It reflects the resilience and hope we have as a united people during difficult times.  The album is being produced by world-renowned music producer Udi Damari, who produces for many other A-List singers and musicians. The album is a new and innovative style that has yet to be seen in the Jewish Music Industry.
The full album is stated to be released in early February.

A year since the ‘Hyper Cacher’ attack in Paris:
JE SUIS JUIF – אני יהודי – I’m a Jew
30 Singers, 3 Languages, 1 SELFIE

Exactly a year has passed, yet the memories of the victims killed during the terrorist attack at “Hyper Cacher” (Kosher supermarket) in Paris, have not been forgotten. Veteran Israeli musician Shai Barak decided to produce a music video using the slogan: Je Suis Juif – that became the symbol of the attack around the world and especially in France.
Barak approached popular Jewish singers from across the globe, and together they recorded a pop song, that they hope will send out a message of Jewish unity. The song was written and sung in 3 languages: Hebrew, English and of course French.
Among the singers, from Israel: Gad Elbaz, Ishay Lapidot, Aaron Razel, Mendy Jeruffi, Shai Barak, JEW2, Dou Reim, Udi Ulman, Amiran& Arik Dvir, The chief IDF cantor Shai Abramson,The Buba Myses Puppet rock band and more.
From the US and the UK: Lipa Schmeltzer & Matt Dub, Benny Freidman, Berry Weber, Eli Gerstner, Shloime Gertner, Ely Katz and more.
From France: Nemouel Harroch, Avraham David, Rap sensation Avraham Moyal and more.
All the singers from around the world filmed themselves using smart-phones in “SELFIE” format. The clip hopes to be the first Jewish Selfie music video, and unite Jews from all denominations around the world.
Barak: “Like all Jews around the world, I was touched to see thousands of French people holding signs with the words ‘I’m a Jew’, at Republic Square. I was looking to produce a song that would express this feeling of Jewish unity, around the world. I hope that this song will become an anthem among all the Jews, everywhere, especially during this difficult time for Jews in Israel and in the Diaspora”.

Je suis Juif

I am a Jew and I am proud you can see
Je suis Juif
אני יהודי
One heart one love my brother come sing with me

Nous sommes un peuple nous sommes unis
New York Tokyo Londres ou Paris
Main dans la main plus jamais peur
Hachem est là dans tous nos coeurs
A chaque instant le jour la nuit
La même foie nous réunie
Aime ton prochain et n’oublies pas
Ta meilleure arme est la Torah

I am a Jew and I am proud
To be one
When we shout loud with pride
We’ll never give up
This is the answer to them all
Let’s raise our heads and let’s stand tall.
They’ll be no tears
and no more sorrow
we’ll stop the fear
so we can face tomorrow
Stepping outside this darkend phase
We fill our hearts with hope and faith.

Bref! Trop de blabla! On va tous mettre à plat ,Au nom d’Allah? Halam! Tous ça c’est pas halal!
On veux la paix.. à jamais..
mon histoire j’veux y croire
Salam shalom ahi ça c’est la victoire, le son de la victoire

3 rocking Jewish musical acts will share the stage at this year’s highly anticipated Soul to Soul Concert.

3 Jewish musical acts from different genres will share the stage at this year’s Soul to Soul concert, uniting decades of Jewish song.

The upcoming Soul to Soul concert will take place on Sunday, March 6 – 26 Adar I at the Brooklyn School of Music.

The annual concert supports Chasdei Soul II Soul, which funds Jewish special education for Crown Heights children with special needs.

This year’s show will have the unique twist of three generations of Jewish rock bands, each of whom brought an innovative new sound to Jewish music of their time.

The concert will star the wildly popular 8th Day band, who pioneered the use of cutting edge lyrics and melodies to express deep Chassidic teachings. Co-founded by brothers Shmuel and Bentzi Marcus, 8th Day is one the most sought after acts today.
They have played hundreds of sold out concerts across the globe, touring in Australia, Europe, Israel, Hong Kong, South Africa, Canada, and all over the United States. Their hit music video for “Ya’alili” has over 3 million views on YouTube. They followed that up with more fan favorites like “All You Got”, “Hooleh!” and “Celebrate.”
8th Day’s fresh and unique sound is complemented by their poetic lyrics and spirited vocal harmonies. What started as a fun family project, has now become a global phenomenon as their fan base continues to grow all over the world.

The show will also star Avraham Rosenblum, one of the original founding members of the Diaspora Yeshiva Band – the first “Chassidic Rock” band. The band fused word of Torah and Tefilah and rock music to touch a whole generation.
Avraham Rosenblum is The ‘Avraham’ of Jewish Rock. An originator and pioneer of ‘Jewish New Music,’ his name is synonymous with the legendary Diaspora Yeshiva Band.
A tireless, inspiring entertainer, Avraham Rosenblum’s international reputation is built on his award-winning, Torah-infused compositions, strong vocal performances, and masterful guitar skills.

The show will also star Rogers Park, known as America’s only Chassidic Folk Band, an award-winning duo out of Chicago, Illinois, featuring Yosef Peysin and Mordy Kurtz.
Their performance is a heartwarming and uplifting experience that weaves together original songs, hilarious parodies, and a healthy dose of mystical Hassidic Niggunim. This combination of music and masterful storytelling has enthralled audiences and gathered rave reviews around the world.
Their debut album is on the way, and the title track of the album, “The Maggid” says everything you would want to know about this talented new band out of Chicago and its fresh yet classic folk sound.
In Europe there would be individuals who would go from town to town as storytellers, bringing tales of light and hope to local villagers in hard to reach places. Rogers Park brings this age-old tradition into our modern world and tells these stories and shares these lessons through song and music.

Ruby Harris, a legendary performer who crosses the borders of several musical galaxies, will be joining Avraham and Rogers Park on the Soul II Soul stage. Ruby, now a collaborator with Rogers Park on their new CD, and a member of the Diaspora Yeshiva Band, has played Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Metropolitan Opera House and everywhere else with MBD, Avraham Fried, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, Lipa, Simcha Leiner, Shlomo Katz, Himmelman, Chaim David, Moshav and many others. Shlomo Katz releases Yismach Melech – A New Song From His Upcoming Album

$

0

Shlomo Katz is in the final stretch before the launch of a new album. Although he identified with the songs of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, his resume is impressive with a number of original albums and famous hit songs he has composed and performed including: Niggun Nevo, Vehakohanim, Kevodo, Shma Koleinu, Shabbos Kodesh, and U’Berosh Hashana, which was released as a single a few months ago.

The songs on this album are not only composed by him, but even some of the original Hebrew lyrics were written by him as well. Nadav Bachar and Oren Tzur helped to produce and arrange the album.
Shlomo is now releasing the album title track, called Yismach Melech. The words of the song, were written by Shlomo himself.
Shlomo recalls, “A number of years ago I was invited to give a shiur to a group of American tourists who were staying in a house on the street Yismach Melech in the Mamilla neighborhood. Something about the name of the street grabbed me, and I thought about it the whole day. Just before we began learning, we sang a number of niggunim. In middle of this singing, this melody simply came to my mind. There were no words to it, but as the day went on I remembered the name of the street which made an impression on me, and I added the lyrics to it, and that became the name of the album.”

Inspiring Voice reviews Ari Goldwag’s Sheves Chaveirim #2

sheves chaverim 2

Ari Goldwag  is an American-born  singer, songwriter, composer, and producer . He achieved fame as a soloist for the Miami Boys Choir at age 10 and starred on five albums and three videos before his voice changed at age 14. He launched a successful music career after his marriage and move to Israel. He has released seven solo albums, and composes songs and produces albums for other artists.

In addition, he has released a unique “Sheves” series. Two are called “Sheves Achim” sung by 2 brothers Shimon and Moshe Bell – one when they were children and one when they were teenagers. He also released a new concept called “Sheves Chaveirim” sung by a choir of 5-6 boys so it’s not a group like Shalsheles Junior, but not a big choir like Miami.

About 2 months ago he released the second volume of Sheves Chaveirim featuring an almost brand new cast. The only repeat performer is his son Moshe Dov. However, he is only repeat in person as his voice has really matured and he has developed into a fantastic star soloist. The other boys are Yedidya and Eliyahu Schneider and Avi and Yehoshua Rubin.

1. Shir Ushvacha – This song was composed by Rafi Gantshar. As part of his work in music, Ari gets to be involved in helping composers bring their songs to life so they can be heard by different people in the Jewish music business. So they come to him to make what’s called a ‘demo.’ Rafi Gantshar came to him with this song, and they did the demo, which got a lot of positive feedback and interest. In the end, Rafi agreed to have the song included in this album. The song is about praising Hashem, and the words are from the end of Yishtabach in Nusach Sefard.

It is an upbeat song with some beautiful high solos. Ari and Moshe Dov do gorgeous backup vocals as he does throughout the album and Ari finishes off with his own solo.

2. Am Am Am – The words are actually Yismechu Bimalchuscha from Shabbos davening. Ari composed it originally for his Am Echad album, but it would have been a little odd to have 2 hit songs called “Am” Therefore, we are privileged to have it on Sheves Chaveirim. The song is out of this world and it featured gorgeous solos by Moshe Dov and also a bridge after it is sung the second time. It is actually faster than Shir Ushvacha so when you are expecting a slow song after a fast song, instead you get a faster song so perhaps the shock value adds to the appreciation of the song.

3. Lo Lefached –  The words are from a  teaching of R’ Nachman of Breslov ZT”L , that although the world’s a narrow bridge – a challenge to pass
over – nevertheless the main thing is not to fear. How can we ‘simply not fear?’ One of his main teachings is the idea of Emunah – trusting that although it is dark, the light is still there, and will return. Although things seem challenging and difficult, we can have faith knowing that one day we will know how Hashem’s hand held us all through the dark times. It is the first slow song of the album and it includes a bridge with English lyrics sung by Ari. Although it is a slow song, the guitars provide an upbeat rhythm to the song to inspire us to have emuna and overcome any challenge we might face.

4. Eliyahu – This song was composed by Moshe Dov Goldwag. This is a very catchy tune at about “hora” speed. Moshe Dov also put together the words for the low part. It’s very creative on his part because it changes the Eliyahu Hanavi song from zmiros into a tefilla to ask Hashem to send us Eliyahu hanavi and redeem us from this galus.

5. Tehilos – The low part’s lyrics are from what we say right before the Shmoneh Esrai at Shachris. The high part is ‘baruch hu u’varuch sh’mo’ – the line we say whenever we hear Hashem’s name in a bracha. It’s so easy to say these words many times a day without ever even noticing them, just like it’s easy to take the blessings in our lives for granted. Singing them in a song, repeating them with awareness, is a great chance to notice the words, and to notice our blessings. Ari composed it in 2009 after the birth of his daughter and felt very grateful to Hashem so he put together these 2 different phrases and combined them to form a gorgeous slow song .

6. Me’ien – This is a real fun song that is really catchy. Ari composed it together with his sister by the Shabbos table. The high and low parts can be sung together, so they could be harmonies to each other. Not only that, but the intro melody can also be sung together with the other parts so you can have 3 groups singing each part at the same time. The second time the song is sung, Moshe Dov has a great solo in the low part that ends off really high.  This great song even inspired me to compose a song together with my daughter at the Shabbos table.

7. Borchu – Composed by Moshe Dov & Ari Goldwag This catchy tune first appeared in Ari’s Acapella Soul #2 that was released in 2014. This is more geshmak because it has music.

8. Rochel Mevaka –  This song evokes strong emotion and longing as it talks about Rochel Imeinu crying to Hashem to have mercy on the Bnei Yisroel in galus. It was past her grave that we walked as we marched out of Israel in chains, and her tears are what evoke a consolation from Hashem that her children will return.Even as we see that return happening in front of our eyes, the exile seems to drag on endlessly. We need to recall her tears, and allow ourselves to cry, as well, as we face off with the challenges of galus today. It is really inspiring and tear jerking in a real positive way. You gotta hear it over and over to appreciate it .

9. Gam Zu – What a way to lift yourself out of melancholy after the previous song! Gam zu is a real leibedike dance song. It includes one of the alumni from the first Sheves Chaverim album – Yair Frohlich, as well as Elisha Willig, who was part of the group in the interim period and was a soloist on the Am Echad album in the hit song “Min Ha’olam” which featured Sheves Chaverim.

To quote Ari from the song booklet – ” A central theme in Yiddishkeit is that every single thing that we see in the world is a manifestation of Hashem. The startling implication of this idea is that even the things that seem to be negative – they are also from Hashem. Since Hashem is kulo tov – All Good – then somehow even the challenges and sadness will ultimately be seen as bringing us to good. It’s so important to keep reminding ourselves that ‘everything that the Merciful One does is for the good’ – ‘this is also good!’ And what better way to do that then with a lively, catchy niggun?”

10. Hoshia Na – The only voices we hear in this song are Ari and Moshe Dov. Ari composed it in 2001 while he was learning in Mirrer Yeshiva and it was at a challenging time for the Jewish people. It is a unique style of slow song and it’s composed with words of begging Hashem for mercy and success. Since it was sung by the father and son duo, Ari added a bridge using the words “Kerachem av al banim” – as a father has compassion on his children, so may Hashem have compassion on us.

11. Nirkod Lanetsach – A translation from the original “Forever Dance” that appeared in Ari’s English Album that was released a little over a year ago. It has become very popular, and Ari wanted to give it new life, while at the same time introducing it to the Israeli public. To be true to the original composition in a different language that does not have the same expressions and ways of speaking is no easy task.  The song concept comes out of the teaching of Chazal that in the future there will be a dance of the righteous in Gan Eden. We will all be part of the dance, as our chazal say ‘v’amech kulam tzadikim’ – all of us will ultimately reach a level of true righteousness. So if we’ll be dancing forever in Gan Eden, it’s a good idea to start practicing now! On a deeper level, what that really means is that we can already access the level of righteousness we will be on then – even now.

To sum up I want to emphasize that Ari Goldwag is special and unique in that he is much more than just a singer. He puts real feeling and pnimiyus into his singing and songs that it inspires one to shape up in ruchniyos and to be optimistic and upbeat.
